History of Tea in Sri Lanka!
Art of Tea๐ฑโย ย
Tea cultivation in Sri Lanka has a rich history dating back to 1867, when James Taylor, a British planter, established the first tea plantation in Loolecondera Estate, Kandy. Before tea, the island was primarily known for its coffee plantations, but a devastating fungal disease, coffee rust, wiped out the coffee industry in the 1860s.
Recognizing tea's potential, British planters expanded tea cultivation across the central highlands, leading to the rise of Ceylon Tea, now renowned worldwide for its exceptional quality. By the early 20th century, Sri Lanka became one of the worldโs largest tea producers. Today, Ceylon Tea is a global brand, celebrated for its rich flavor, aroma, and diverse varieties, including black, green, and white tea.
Tea remains a vital part of Sri Lankaโs economy and culture, supporting millions of livelihoods while maintaining its reputation for producing some of the finest teas in the world. ๐ฟ๐
